What Wedding Photography Taught Me About Better Headshots for Nashville Businesses

Nashville Headshot Photographer

Most people do not walk into a photo session feeling completely comfortable.

That is true on a wedding day, and it is definitely true when someone is getting a new headshot.

I have heard it hundreds of times:

“I’m awkward in photos.”

“I never know what to do with my hands.”

“I hate having my picture taken.”

“Just tell me what to do.”

After photographing weddings for more than 16 years, I have learned that creating great photos is not just about lighting, posing, or camera settings. Those things matter, of course. But the real work is helping people feel comfortable enough to look like themselves.

That lesson has shaped the way I photograph weddings, and it is also the reason I love serving Nashville businesses through professional headshots.

Weddings taught me how to help people relax quickly

A wedding day moves fast.

There are timelines, families, emotions, nerves, weather changes, and a hundred little moments happening all at once. Most couples are not professional models. They are real people having one of the biggest days of their lives, and they need someone who can help them feel calm, confident, and cared for in front of the camera.

Over the years, I have learned how to give clear direction without making people feel stiff. I have learned how to read a room, calm nerves, move quickly, and help people look natural even when they feel anything but natural.

That experience matters more than people realize.

Because whether I am photographing a bride and groom on their wedding day or a team of professionals in a Nashville office, the goal is similar:

Help people look confident, approachable, and like themselves.

A great headshot is not just a picture

For many professionals, a headshot is often the first impression someone has of them.

It may show up on a company website, LinkedIn profile, email signature, speaker bio, press release, proposal, or marketing material. Before a client ever meets someone in person, they may see that photo.

That means a professional headshot has a job to do.

It needs to communicate trust.
It needs to feel polished.
It needs to look current.
It needs to feel consistent with the company’s brand.
And most importantly, it needs to feel like a real person.

A stiff, uncomfortable photo can make someone look disconnected or unapproachable. A good headshot helps people feel confident before the first conversation even begins.

Most people just need good direction

One of the biggest myths about headshots is that some people are simply “photogenic” and others are not.

I do not really believe that.

What most people need is not a different face. They need better direction.

They need someone to notice the small things: posture, expression, chin position, shoulders, hands, angles, and tension. They need someone who can guide them without overwhelming them.

A strong headshot session should not feel like someone is saying, “Stand there and figure it out.”

It should feel simple.

I tell people what to do. I adjust as we go. I keep the session moving. I help them understand what looks good and why. And usually, within a few minutes, the nerves start to fade.

That is one of the biggest things wedding photography has taught me. People relax when they trust the person behind the camera.

Nashville businesses need more than a photographer

When a business hires someone for team headshots, they are not only looking for good photos.

They need the process to be easy.

They need their team to know where to go and when to show up. They need the setup to look consistent. They need the photo day to run smoothly. They need image selection and delivery to be simple. They need the whole thing to avoid becoming one more complicated project on someone’s plate.

That is why systems matter so much.

For Nashville businesses, especially growing teams, headshot photography should be organized from beginning to end. A good process can include a simple scheduling link, automatic reminders, an on-site setup, private image selection, consistent lighting, and a clear delivery timeline.

The goal is to make the experience easy for the company and comfortable for every person being photographed.

Comfort creates better brand images

Every business wants to look professional, but professionalism does not have to feel cold.

The best headshots feel polished and human at the same time. They show confidence without feeling overly posed. They show warmth without feeling casual or unprofessional.

That balance is important for Nashville businesses of all sizes, whether it is a law firm, healthcare company, real estate team, nonprofit, creative agency, financial group, or small business.

People want to work with people they trust.

A strong headshot helps build that trust before the first handshake.

The same skill serves different kinds of people

Wedding photography and headshot photography may seem very different from the outside, but both require the same foundation:

Know how to work with real people.

The camera matters. The lighting matters. The editing matters. But the ability to help someone feel comfortable may matter most of all.

After years of photographing couples, families, wedding parties, executives, speakers, teams, and business owners, I have learned that people do not need a complicated photo experience.

They need clear direction.
They need a calm presence.
They need a process that respects their time.
They need photos that help them feel confident.

That is what I bring into every headshot session.

Madison + Kevin = Union Station Hotel Wedding

Madison and Kevin…where do I begin? Actually, I know exactly where to start. I first met Madison a few years ago when at her brother’s engagement session. It was out on a big beautiful property in Kentucky. It was nice surprise when I got a message from her asking about my availability. Working with the same family for another wedding is one of my favorite things. It’s like a family reunion.

So let’s talk about the wedding. Waller, the cutest dog this side of the Mississippi was trying to steal the show all day. Luckily, he was tucked away for the ceremony so Madison could get the attention every bride deserves. The vibe was Historic Nashville dancing with New Orleans. Classy. Party.

It had been a few years since I got to photograph a wedding at the beautiful Union Station Hotel. Did you see this place? Soak in the crazy beautiful architecture. And the roof makes you feel like your in a palace.

This wedding was fun in so many different ways. I’m sad this will probably be the last wedding I get to do for this wonderful family. Hopefully I’m still shooting weddings in 20 years or so and we can get together again.

Last thing. A round of applause please for the amazingly talented Bruce Pitman and his team at Bruce Pitman Inc. After I walked into the reception, I had to pick my jaw off the floor. Stunning.

Alex + Scott = Scarritt Bennett + Schermerhorn Wedding

Alex and Scott’s wedding day was one of those rare combinations of elegance and ease. They chose two of Nashville’s most beautiful venues — Scarritt Bennett for the ceremony and Schermerhorn Symphony Center for the reception — and the day flowed perfectly between the two.

The ceremony was filled with laughter and warmth, especially when Alex tried to slide Scott’s ring on and it didn’t quite fit. It was such a simple moment, but one that captured their personalities perfectly — laid back, lighthearted, and deeply connected.

The evening that followed at the Schermerhorn was timeless and full of energy. Guests filled the space with laughter, great music, and the kind of joy that only comes from being surrounded by the people who know you best. It was a classy celebration, but never too serious — just an incredible night that felt true to who they are.
